Joss Whedon on Batgirl casting: “I doubt it will be a name”

April 20, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Last month it was announced that Joss Whedon has been brought aboard to direct the DC Extended Universe’s upcoming Batgirl movie. Since the news, there’s been plenty of speculation as to who might get the coveted role; Emma Stone always being the name to pop up the most frequently. She’s obviously well suited for the part, and talented ander involvement would put butts in seats. However, it seems that Joss Whedon is interested in going down an alternate route.

“I don’t have my eye on anybody,” Whedon told Variety during the red carpet premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. “I feel like I’m creating this character, I’m gonna dialogue with her and then we’ll see who joins that later on… I doubt it will be a name. This is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her.”

This wouldn’t be the first time the DC Extended Universe has went down the route of casting a relative unknown. Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot were not huge names prior to their casting, but Warner Bros. also saw fit to include the likes of Ben Affleck, Margot Robbie, and Jason Momoa into the DCEU mix. As far as the Batman franchise goes, finding an unknown is definitely not a new concept. It’s hard to believe now, but Christian Bale wasn’t exactly a household name prior to his casting as the Dark Knight. That decision worked out pretty well.
