Nathan Fillion discusses his “charming” Cars 3 role as Sterling

April 25, 2017 by Robert Kojder

From what we’ve seen so far of Cars 3, it looks like Disney-Pixar is taking the franchise in a new direction tonally with the third instalment of the blockbuster animated series. We’ll also be introduced to a number of new characters, one of which – Sterling – is being voiced by Nathan Fillion, and Fillion recently spoke to EW to give us some insight into the new owner of the Rust-eze Racing Center.

“While Lightning has been racing, the world has been changing, and Sterling has been at the forefront of that change and sees where it’s going and how to get that first,” said Fillion. “Anytime you say something about a quality of a character that’s ‘charming,’ I think a lot of people make the mistake and think of skeevy, but charming is someone who admires you, can disarm you, and gain your trust. He’s not being interesting, he’s being interested. He’s not, ‘Hey there, I’m great,’ which is not charming. He’s ‘Hey there, you’re great.'”

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

Cars 3 is set for release on June 16th 2017 in the States and July 14th 2017 in the UK.
