DC announces Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay and Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen animated movies

July 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday at the San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. hosted the world premiere of Batman and Harley Quinn, after which we got word on the next instalments of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line.

First up is official confirmation of an adaptation of the DC Comics Elseworlds story Batman: Gotham By Gaslight, which reimagines the Dark Knight as a Victorian-era detective on the hunt for the notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper. We already knew this would be the next animated movie from DC, as it was revealed on the leaked Blu-ray artwork for Batman and Harley Quinn earlier this month, and it is set for release in early 2018.

Task Force X will take centre stage for the next release in the spring of 2018 with Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay. Details on this are scarce, but it will be an original tale rather than an adaptation of any existing comic book story.

Finally, we have another two part release a la Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, this time adapting the iconic Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen story arcs. It’s said that Death of Superman will present a much more faithful adaptation than the 2007 release Superman: Doomsday, and it will hit in late 2018 with Reign of the Supermen following in early 2019.

In addition to the above, we’ll also get to see the Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders sequel Batman: Two-Face featuring the late Adam West’s final performance as Batman, along with another DC Super Hero Girls release.

What do you make of this line-up of animated movies? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
