Samuel L. Jackson likely to co-star with Brie Larson in Captain Marvel

July 2, 2017 by Justin Cook

Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been entirely absent of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury thus far, but it looks like the latter of half of Marvel’s upcoming slate of films will feature the eye-patch-wearing former S.H.I.E.L.D. director more prominently, especially if a new report is to be trusted.

While Jackson has already signed on to make his MCU return with next year’s superhero extravaganza Avengers: Infinity War and will likely pop up in the untitled Avengers film set to follow it, months ago the actor teased that Fury might have a role in Marvel’s first solo female-led film, Captain Marvel. Now, Christopher Marc of Omega Underground has revealed on Twitter that Jackson wasn’t lying, as it looks like he will be co-starring alongside Brie Larson’s titular superhero in the 2019 film.

Marc did clarify that the casting news isn’t official, but “the word” is that Jackson will have a big role in the film. The news means that he’ll have to extend his contract with Marvel Studios, as his initial nine-picture deal has been fulfilled (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4).

His tweet also mentions that filming will get underway in Atlanta, Georgia (presumably at Pinewood Studios, Marvel’s go-to location for shooting) on January 8th, 2018; the film’s working title will be “Warbird.” Check out the post for yourself down below…

Although he did show up briefly in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the last MCU movie in which Nick Fury had a substantial role was Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which to this day remains one of Marvel Studios’ most critically acclaimed efforts. Fury has become a fan-favorite character in the cinematic universe, so his appearances, no matter the amount of screen time, are almost always welcomed by fans.

This isn’t Jackson and Larson’s first collaboration; the two starred in Kong: Skull Island earlier this year and will be seen together again later this year in Unicorn Store, which Larson stars in as well as directs. If you’re looking for a deep cut, the two also lent their voices to the 2007 March of the Penguins parody film, Farce of the Penguins.

Captain Marvel is set for release on March 8th, 2019, with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) directing.
