Exclusive Interview with Patti Cake$ director Geremy Jasper and Bridget Everett

August 28, 2017 by Freda Cooper

After captivating audiences at Sundance and Cannes, Patti Cake$ arrives like a gale of fresh air this week in British cinemas.  The story of New Jersey teenager, Patricia, who dreams of escaping the pressures of her life by becoming a rapper, the film marks a number of firsts.  First feature for writer/director Geremy Jasper, a graduate of the Sundance Directors’ Labs.  Breakout role for Australian Danielle Macdonald, who plays the Patti of the title.  And first main role for cabaret singer and Amy Schumer collaborator, Bridget Everett, who plays Patricia’s mum.

Jasper and Everett talked to Flickering Myth’s Freda Cooper about how they both moved from music careers to the movies and that self-destruct instinct.   And Everett gave an impromptu performance of one of her songs from the film…

Patti Cake$ is out in UK cinemas on 1st September.  Read our review here.
