Ralph Macchio and William Zabka returning for Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai

August 5, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Ralph Macchio is set to reprise his role as Daniel LaRusso for a new Karate Kid series entitled Cobra Kai, which has received a ten-episode straight-to-series order from YouTube Red.

A half hour comedy series, Cobra Kai will also see William Zabka back as Daniel-san’s nemesis Johnny Lawrence. The plot will pick up thirty years after The Karate Kid Part III and sees a down-on-his-luck Johnny reopening the Cobra Kai dojo and reigniting his feud with the now-successful Daniel, who is struggling to maintain balance in his life without his mentor Mr. Miyagi.

“Like everyone who grew up in the 1980s, the three of us are enormous fans of The Karate Kid,” said writers Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine), Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar). “Cobra Kai will be a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality.”
