Denis Villeneuve is interested in directing Bond 25, but Dune is his priority

November 12, 2017 by Gary Collinson

With Sam Mendes opting against a return for Bond 25, EON is currently searching for a director to take the reins on Daniel Craig’s final outing as super spy 007.

A few months back, it was reported that Yann Demange (’71), David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) and Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) topped EON’s shortlist, while a subsequent rumour suggested that Villeneuve is Craig’s favoured choice to take up the reins.

Well, during an interview with The Playlist, Villeneuve has admitted that he’d love to collaborate with Craig on Bond 25, however his priority remains his planned adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterpiece Dune.

“The thing is I don’t now about that, but listen,” said Villeneuve when asked about the Bond 25 interest. “Daniel Craig is a very inspiring actor and I had some contact and the thing is that I’m busy right now doing Dune. But, I will say to have the privilege to work with him it would be a dream. I would love to work with Daniel and a Bond movie for me would be a treat. It’s a matter of timing, I guess.”

Given that EON has set a November 2019 release date for Bond 25, it would seem unlikely that Villeneuve could complete work on Dune and shoot a Bond movie by that date. One possibility of course would be to push back the release of Bond 25, but the chances of that happening would surely be unlikely, unless the producers really, really want Villeneuve on board.

Who would you like to see directing Bond 25? Would Villeneuve be your choice? Let us know in the comments below…
