The director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, has spoken about how his movie is like a period piece.
Star Wars can fall into many categories: sci-fi, space opera, action adventure, etc and so on. The latest entry into saga, The Last Jedi, has now arrived into cinemas across the world and is certainly all of these things.
Johnson, however, also says that the film is a period piece. Speaking to Variety, the director explained his thinking:
“Star Wars is not science-fiction, it’s not futurism; it’s almost like a period piece — and the period that you’re after is ‘a Star Wars world of the mind’ that you played in when you were a kid. It’s a very specific and delicate aesthetic to capture.”
Johnson certainly isn’t wrong. The aesthetic of these movies was created back in the 70s and the films we love today retain a lot of that same look. A part of what thrilled audiences so much when the series returned was how it looked and felt like the Star Wars they all knew.
