Rian Johnson discusses the Rey’s parents reveal in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

December 17, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Major spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi follow. You have been warned…

The two big questions coming out of 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens were: 1) ‘Who is Supreme Leader Snoke?’, and 2) ‘Who are Rey’s parents?’. While the first was simply tossed aside in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as promised director Rian Johnson did give us an answer to the second, with Kylo Ren revealing that Rey is the offspring of two junkers on Jakku who sold her for drinking money.

The big reveal divided fans who have been debating Rey’s identity for the past two years, as well as sparking speculation that Kylo could have been lying to Rey in order to tempt her into joining him. However, according to Johnson himself, that isn’t the case – at least as far as he is concerned.

“I don’t think he’s lying in that moment — I think he is like telling what he saw and I think that Rey seems like she believes it in that moment,” Johnson tells Bustle. “So for me, I wrote it as an honest revelation and as an honest kind of reaction to it, as opposed to a move in a game of chess. Now as we know in these movies, you know the whole idea of a certain point of view comes into play and as you know I’m not involved in writing the next movie. J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio are writing it so, I want to make it clear I’m not sure how it’s going to get resolved. For me the important part was saying it was an emotionally honest revelation, I feel like it, I don’t know, I believed it.”

Now, as Johnson states, it is entirely possible that J.J. Abrams will take things in a different direction come Star Wars: Episode IX, so it seems the debate is likely going to continue for the next two years.

What did you make of the Rey’s parents reveal in Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Were you satisfied, or did you find it disappointing? Let us know in the comments below…
