Peyton Reed discusses Ant-Man and the Wasp being “radically different” from Avengers: Infinity War

July 10, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Peyton Reed, director of Ant-Man and the Wasp, has talked about making his film radically different from Avengers: Infinity War.

Infinity War was as big as it comes in terms of blockbuster movies; everything about the film from the themes to the characters was of gargantuan proportions. Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and the Wasp takes the MCU in a slightly different direction, however, bringing events back to a more manageable ground level.

Reed has discussed with The Verge the process of releasing a MCU film in the aftermath of Infinity War: “In terms of talking to the other directors, it is the basic information that we all want to be consistent about the characters. If Scott Lang’s going to appear in another movie, or Hope, or something, you want it to be tonally consistent with what you’ve established in your movies. So there was always that.

“But there is also that thing of — for me, anyway — being a director and knowing the vibe or the tone of the other movie. As I read stuff and looked at stuff from Infinity War, it just felt like, ‘Okay, this is good. [Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp are] both very, very different, and they both have different narrative ambitions.

“I think that’s what has become really intriguing to me about the MCU. It’s all under this umbrella, but the stories can be radically different and can be very much their own thing and very much the voices of the different filmmakers. That’s an exciting thing to be part of, creatively.”

There’s no doubt that having films in a franchise of such a drastically different scale, scope, and tone certainly brings great variety. Are you as pleased as Reed with the different types of film that Marvel is making?

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes Ant-Man and The Wasp, a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a super hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.

Ant-Man and the Wasp sees Peyton Reed returning to the director’s chair and stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Michael Pena (Luis), David Dastmalchian (Kurt), Abby Ryder Fortson (Cassie Lang), Judy Greer (Maggie), Bobby Cannavale (Paxton) and T.I. (Dave), while new additions to the cast include Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne, Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster/Goliath, Hannah John-Kamen as The Ghost, Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch and Randall Park as Jimmy Woo.
