Joker vs. Harley Quinn movie is a mix of Bad Santa and This Is Us

September 23, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in August of last year it was reported that Warner Bros. had enlisted Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love, This Is Us) to write and direct a Joker vs. Harley Quinn movie – one of numerous projects in development at DC Films featuring one or both of its titular two villains.

During an interview with Metro, Ficarra has now provided an update on the Suicide Squad spinoff, suggesting that the tone for their script comes across as a mashup of Bad Santa and This Is Us:

“We had so much fun, I don’t know if we have had more fun writing a script in our career,” said Ficarra. “It was sort of like, we wrote Bad Santa a couple of years ago, and it was that sensibility mixed with our This Is Us sensibility. We kind of meshed them together. We were doing a relationship movie but with the sensibility of a Bad Santa, fucked up, mentally deranged people. It was a lot of fun.”

Ficarra then went on to reveal what they have planned for the opening, stating that: “The whole thing starts with Harley kidnapping Dr Phil. Played by Dr Phil hopefully. Because her and the Joker are having problems with their relationship.”

Along with Joker vs. Harley Quinn, Warner Bros. is prepping a Birds of Prey movie featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley, while there’s also planned solo movies for each of the characters, not to mention Suicide Squad 2 and the currently in production standalone Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix. As such, Ficarra is a little unsure about the status of their project at the moment:

“We handed the script in and everybody loved it,” added Ficarra. “But I don’t know when they are going to do it. Because I know that they want to do Birds of Prey and they want to do Todd Phillips’ film first. Maybe if Birds of Prey goes well ours will be next.”
