Fantastic Beasts star Ezra Miller says fans should trust J.K. Rowling regarding the twists

November 22, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Ezra Miller, one of the stars of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, says that J.K. Rowling knows what she is doing regarding the film’s twists (spoilers follow).

The Harry Potter fandom is certainly a passionate one and they demand that everything that happens on screen aligns with canon. So when a major twist happened in the latest Fantastic Beasts film that didn’t line up with known events, fans were confused.

In the film, it is revealed that Credence is another Dumbledore sibling and the dates of his birth just don’t match up. Ezra Miller, who plays the character, told EW that he was as shocked as anyone else:

“I was shocked, stunned, confused, petrificus totalus with wonder and fascination. And I still have a lot of questions for which I have no answers.”

However, Miller has said that fans should know that they can trust Rowling regarding the film’s twists: “She knows the mythology so well and I think she’s into confounding you for a moment and having a fan go, ‘wait that can’t make sense!’ and then showing you how things you thought couldn’t make sense make sense. I think she enjoys people not getting it for a second. She’s done it to us a bunch of times.”

Were you shocked by the twists and turns in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald? Are you able to trust that Rowling will show that this all makes sense in time?

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald  sees David Yates directing a cast that includes Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone, Zoe Kravitz as Leta Lestrange, Kevin Guthrie as Abernathy, Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore, Callum Turner as Theseus Scamander, William Nadylam as Yusuf Kama, Ingvar Sigurdsson as Grimmson, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Skender, David Sakurai as Krall, Brontis Jodorowsky as Nicolas Flamel, Wolf Roth as Spielman, Victoria Yeates as Bunty, Derek Riddell as Torquil Travers, Poppy Corby-Tuech as Rosier, Cornell S. John as Arnold Guzman and Claudia Kim as Nagini.
