Avengers: Infinity War’s snap is officially named The Decimation

December 8, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday, Marvel Studios unleashed the trailer for Avengers: Endgame, giving us our first glimpse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the devastating conclusion to Avengers: Infinity War where Thanos snapped his fingers and wiped out half of all life in the universe.

Said event has been referred to by fans as ‘The Snap’ or ‘The Snappening’, but now thanks to the new book Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War: The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath, we have its official name – The Decimation.

Marvel has previously used the name ‘Decimation’ before as the title of a 2005 comic book event which explored the ramifications of ‘M-Day’, where Scarlet Witch used her powers in an attempt to rid the world of the mutant gene, depowering the vast majority of the mutant population.

Interestingly, the book also reveals that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have chosen to keep the truth about The Decimation quiet from the surviving members of the population, believing that it would “hardly help the world to heal”.
