Marvel Legends figure finally confirms Jude Law’s Captain Marvel role

January 2, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Warning. Captain Marvel spoilers follow…

Well, it appears that we can finally put to rest all the back and forth over Jude Law’s Captain Marvel role, as a leaked image of Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Series figure packaging has arrived online which confirms that the British actor is NOT playing Mar-Vell (as previously suggested by a recent promo poster), but rather the Kree villain Yon-Rogg (as previously suggested by a Pop! Vinyl leak).

Yon-Rogg is a Kree military commander who in the comic books has a deep hatred of Mar-Vell and also played an instrumental role in Carol Danvers gaining her powers. Having kidnapped the Air Force pilot, Yon-Rogg battled Mar-Vell, which resulted in Carol being knocked into the Psyche-Magnitron, a Kree device that altered her genetic structure and granted her superhuman abilities.

Quite how closely the movie will stick to that origin story remains to be seen, particularly as it now seems that Mar-Vell could be absent from the film. However, we’d have to assume that however things play out, Captain Marvel and Yon-Rogg will find themselves on opposing sides by the end of the movie.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
