Ben Affleck explains The Batman exit, says he “couldn’t crack it”

February 15, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Some two years after stepping down as director on The Batman, it was finally confirmed last month that Ben Affleck has decided to hang up the cape and cowl with the actor officially exiting the DC Extended Universe and making way for a new actor to take on the role for director Matt Reeves’ solo movie.

Affleck shared a brief comment on Twitter alongside the announcement, stating that he is “excited” to see Reeves’ vision come to life, and now he’s elaborated on the reasoning for his DCEU exit during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

“I tried to direct a version of it and worked with a really good screenwriter but just couldn’t come up with a version,” said Affleck. “I couldn’t crack it and so I thought it’s time for someone else to take a shot at it. They got some really good people so I’m excited.”

Several actors have been rumoured to be in contention for The Batman over the past few months, while Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home) have both been named as favourites by various bookmakers. However, with the film not set for release until June 2021, we may still face a wait before we discover who’ll be succeeding Affleck as the Caped Crusader.
