Warner Bros. developing Aquaman horror spinoff The Trench

February 9, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

With Aquaman making an enormous splash at the box office, overtaking The Dark Knight Rises to become the highest-grossing DC movie of all time, it comes as little surprise to hear that Warner Bros. and DC Films are keen to further explore the world of the King of Atlantis.

It’s already been reporting that Warner Bros. is in early talks with James Wan for Aquaman 2, and now THR has revealed that the studio is also moving ahead with a spinoff film entitled The Trench, which will focus on the beastly creatures who attack Aquaman in Mera in December’s blockbuster.

The site reports that newcomers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have signed on to write the script for the spinoff, which will be produced by Wan and Peter Safran, and is said to be envisioned as a much more modestly-budgeted project that the typical DC movie.

Details on the project are being kept under wraps, but the report does reveal that the film will take place in the undersea kingdom of the Trench, and will not feature the main cast of Aquaman.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman”, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime — one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be … a king.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish as King Atlan.
