DC’s Joker movie is a “character study of a mentally ill person”

March 29, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Marc Maron, who will appear in Joker, has confirmed the film is indeed an origin story, as well as a character study of a “mentally ill person”.

There is a lot of intrigue surrounding the Joaquin Phoenix led Joker. With the film being detached from the DCEU and having nothing to do with Jared Leto’s version of the Joker, audiences aren’t entirely sure what to expect.

Well, comedian Marc Maron, who has a role in the film recently spoke to NME about what fans can expect from Joker and why he decided to join the cast: “I think it’s a very interesting approach to this world. I’ve been somewhat judgemental when it comes to comic book movies and I’ve got a little pushback in the press for being a hypocrite. Whatever I think, if you get a call and someone says, ‘Hey do you wanna do a scene with Robert De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix?’ your principals fall to the wayside.

“If it’s relative to what I think of Marvel movies then it’s like, ‘Yeah, of course I’m gonna do that’. Oddly, it’s not that kind of movie. The approach that Todd Phillips has taken is more of an origin story and a character study of a mentally ill person that becomes The Joker. It’s more of an intimate and gritty movie with a very specific scope. It’s going to be really interesting to see how it comes out.”

It all sounds very intriguing. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until October to see exactly what the film has in store for us. Are you looking forward to Joker? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…

Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Todd Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker is set for release on October 4th 2019 and stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island), Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) and Dante Pereira-Olson (You Were Never Really Here).
