Keanu Reeves turned down Jude Law’s Captain Marvel role for John Wick 3

March 3, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Keanu Reeves is a name that’s long been linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (see Doctor Strange, for example), and if a report from Charles Murphy at That Hashtag Show is to be believed, it almost came to fruition this year… if not for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

According to Murphy, Reeves was actually set to take on the Jude Law role in the upcoming Marvel blockbuster, but was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with the latest instalment in the John Wick saga.

Adding weight to this report is a previous tweet from Justin Kroll of Variety, who stated back in 2017 that Reeves had passed on the part, with Marvel then turning to Jude Law to fill the role as the male lead opposite Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers.

Reeves – who starred in 2005’s DC movie Constantine – has previously expressed interest in other comic book roles – specifically Batman and Wolverine – and as it happens both of those are vacant at the moment following Ben Affleck’s departure as The Dark Knight and Marvel’s upcoming acquisition of 20th Century Fox’s film and TV assets. Warner Bros. is reportedly after a young actor for Batman, but as for Marvel and Logan… who knows?

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). It is set for release on March 8th.
