The Little Mermaid director expertly dodges question about Lindsay Lohan’s Ariel casting campaign

March 10, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With Mary Poppins Returns now out of the way, director Rob Marshall is turning his attention to his next project for Disney – a live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid.

While the likes of Spider-Man and The Greatest Showman star Zendaya has been linked to the title role, one person who has been lobbying hard to play Ariel over the past couple of years is Lindsay Lohan, with the Mean Girls actress stating earlier this year that she’s been “harassing her agent” about the part.

So, does she have a chance? Well, it would seem unlikely, judging by how expertly Marshall dodged the question when asked by Entertainment Tonight if Lohan’s casting was a possibility.

“Gosh, I don’t know who’s gonna play these roles yet,” replied the filmmaker. “We haven’t really got that far. I think we’ll start that process probably sometimes this summer. You know, right now we’re just focusing on the characters, the material, which is everything. You know, that’s the most important thing.”
