John Wick: Chapter 3 dethrones Avengers: Endgame to top the box office with franchise best opening

May 19, 2019 by Gary Collinson

After three weeks of decimating the box office, Avengers: Endgame has fallen from the top of the charts this weekend courtesy of Keanu Reeves and the hotly-anticipated John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

The third instalment in the acclaimed action series opened in first place in North America and topped tracking estimates of $50 million with an opening haul of $57 million. Throw in a further $35.2 million from 66 markets, and that adds up to a franchise best global bow of $92.2 million.

“John Wick is a unique character and franchise that has grown in popularity from film-to-film and keeps getting better and better, thanks to the incredible talent of Keanu Reeves and because of the creativity and true artistry of the filmmaking team and our partners at Thunder Road, as well as director Chad Stahelski,” said Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “This is the best-reviewed film of the series so far, and we believe word-of-mouth will continue to drive strong business for the film all over the world.”

With an opening pushing $100 million worldwide, it’s surely only a matter of time before we get word on John Wick: Chapter 4, while fans also have the TV spinoff series The Continental to look forward to courtesy of Starz.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum reunites Keanu Reeves with director Chad Stahelski and also features returning cast members Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, and Lance Reddick alongside newcomers Hiroyuki Sanada (47 Ronin, The Wolverine), Anjelica Huston (Isle of Dogs), Halle Berry (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Asia Kate Dillon (Billions), Mark Dacascos (Lucky Day), Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), Jason Mantzoukas (The House), Tiger Hu Chen (Man of Tai Chi), Robin Lord Taylor (Gotham) and The Raid’s Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman.
