Godzilla vs. Kong may be pushed back due to King of the Monsters’ underwhelming box office

June 10, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With Godzilla: King of the Monsters delivering somewhat underwhelming box office returns, the $170 million-budgeted blockbuster having grossed just $292.3 million after two weeks of release, it seems we may now face a longer wait until we see the legendary kaiju squaring off against the Eighth Wonder of the World.

During a Producers Guild of America conference, Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich has suggested that the studio may push back the release of the MonsterVerse crossover Godzilla vs. Kong (currently slated for March 2020) in an effort to save off any further franchise fatigue.

“[Godzilla vs. Kong] will deliver for fans in the way they were looking for [in King of the Monsters],” said Emmerich. “It might come out later in the year, so we can deliver an A+ movie.”

Godzilla vs. Kong will serve as a sequel to WB and Legendary’s Godzilla movies and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, bringing together the two iconic movie monsters for only the second time in history (they previously clashed in Toho’s 1962 film King Kong vs. Godzilla).

In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.

Godzilla vs. Kong is being directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest, Blair Witch) and sees Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline) and Ziyi Zhang (The Cloverfield Paradox) reprising their roles from the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters, while new additions to the MonsterVerse include Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight), Rebecca Hall (Holmes and Watson), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Shun Oguri (Crows Zero), and Lance Reddick (The Wire). It is set for release on March 13th 2020.
