SPOILERS: Kevin Feige says Spider-Man: Far From Home’s big post-credits surprise cameo had been planned for a long time

July 11, 2019 by Samuel Brace

This post contains major spoilers for Spider-Man: Far From Home’s post-credits scene. You have been warned…

One of Spider-Man: Far From Home’s biggest surprises came during the film’s post-credits scene as we got to see see J.K. Simmons returning as J. Jonah Jameson after having played the character so famously in the Sam Raimi trilogy.

How long have Marvel been planning this? Well, according to Kevin Feige in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, they have wanted to do this for a long time:

“It was an idea we had from the very earliest conversations of, if we at Marvel Studios get to work with Sony and make a Spider-Man movie, we want to bring Jameson back, somehow. And thinking about who it could be, we really thought J.K. as an actor is so versatile, and you look at his amazing iconic performance in the Raimi films. But then look at his amazing performances in Whiplash and in other films. You go, it can be the same guy but a different tone, and tap into sort of more modern, news personalities of today.

“So that was sort of the why. And also to tap back into, we’ve spent, certainly the five Tom Holland as Spider-Man in the MCU films that we’ve made together, has been about taking him literally out of New York to different places, things we’ve never seen before with him, space briefly, interact with the Avengers, Europe in this film, that as he came back to New York, suggesting, ‘Okay. We’re going to get back to that.’ How awesome is it seeing him swing around at the end of that movie, and with the web wings glide through a under-construction version of Avengers Tower.”

There is certainly a lot to look forward to with Spider-Man’s future in the MCU and having Jameson on board will certainly add a fun element back into the mix.

Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series! Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!

Spider-Man: Far From Home features the return of Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Zendaya (Michelle), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Angourie Rice (Betty Brant), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), with Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as Mysterio.
