Pedro Pascal explains how The Mandalorian differs from Boba Fett

September 5, 2019 by Liam Waddington

For Star Wars fans, one of the fan-favourite characters to come out of the Original Trilogy is the bounty hunter Boba Fett, who was introduced into the saga in The Empire Strikes Back and quickly perished at the beginning of Return of the Jedi.

Now, in The Mandalorian, we are being introduced to another bounty hunter dressed in the iconic Mandalorian armour, and played by Narcos and Game of Thrones’ Pedro Pascal. However, despite both this new character and Boba Fett dressing in the armour and chasing down bounties, it seems that’s where the similarities between the two end.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pascal has explained how his character differs from the most memorable Mandalorian seen previously in the franchise: “Ultimately he wants to do the right thing. But his duties could very much be in conflict with his destiny and doing the right thing has many faces. It can be a very windy road.”

The Mandalorian producer Dave Filoni went on to add that: “Boba Fett is a clone, according to Attack of the Clones, and by asking [creator George Lucas], he would say Boba Fett is not Mandalorian, not born on Mandalore. He’s more of a person indoctrinated into it, into the way of life, and gets a hold of the armour.”

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The Mandalorian sees Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) leading a cast that includes Gina Carano (Deadpool), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Nick Nolte (Afflication), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man). It is set to premiere on Disney+ on November 12th 2019.
