UPDATE: Robert Downey Jr. returning as Tony Stark in Marvel’s Black Widow via deleted Captain America: Civil War scene

September 16, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Despite his sacrifice this summer in Avengers: Endgame, we may not have seen the last of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, as Deadline is reporting that he will be reprising his role for an appearance in next year’s Phase Four-launching Black Widow movie.

The trade offers no details as to how big of a role the actor might play in the movie, which is headlined by Downey’s fellow fallen Avenger Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff and takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Given that there’s been no official announcement from Marvel, one would suspect that Tony’s role could be limited to a brief cameo, if the rumour proves true.

UPDATE: According to Comic Book, Downey will actually appear in Black Widow thanks to unused footage from Captain America: Civil War, featuring a scene where Natasha is confronting by Tony over her betrayal.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
