J.J. Abrams thinks not including The Emperor in The Rise of Skywalker would have been “very weird”

November 26, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams believes it would have been “very weird” if Emperor Palpatine didn’t return for the ninth and final instalment in the Skywalker Saga after he was a major factor in both the Original Trilogy and the Prequel Trilogy.

“Well, when you look at this as nine chapters of a story, perhaps the weirder thing would be if Palpatine didn’t return,” Abrams told Uproxx. “You just look at what he talks about, who he is, how important he is, what the story is — strangely, his absence entirely from the third trilogy would be conspicuous. It would be very weird. That’s not to say there was a bible and we knew what happens at every step. But when Larry Kasdan and I worked on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we didn’t do it in a vacuum. We very purposely looked at what came before. We chose to tell a story that touches upon specific things and themes and ideas that we’ve seen before, to begin a new story. But we examined all that came before to ask where does this feel like it’s going?”

However, the previous director of Episode IX Colin Trevorrow has recently revealed The Emperor didn’t feature in his plans for the final instalment: “Bringing back the Emperor was an idea J.J. brought to the table when he came on board. It’s honestly something I never considered. I commend him for it. This was a tough story to unlock, and he found the key.”

Do you agree with J.J. Abrams that it would have been weird not to include The Emperor in the final episode? Are you looking forward to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…
