Rick Moranis returning for Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel Shrunk

February 12, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Well, here’s some rather surprising – and rather welcome – news, with Deadline reporting that Rick Moranis has closed a deal with Disney to reprise his Honey, I Shrunk the Kids role of Wayne Szalinski for the upcoming sequel Shrunk.

Moranis stepped back from acting in 1997 to raise his children, making his last on screen appearance in 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves and following it up with voice roles in the 2001 animation Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys and Disney’s Brother Bear and Brother Bear 2.

After turning down the opportunity to cameo in 2016’s Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (along with this year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it seems), Moranis did reprise his Spaceballs role as Dark Helmet – in voice only – for a guest appearance in the sitcom The Goldbergs, and also agreed to take part in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming special An Afternoon With SCTV which was filmed in 2018.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids director Joe Johnston is returning to direct Shrunk, with Josh Gad taking on the role of Wayne’s now-adult son Nick Szalinski, who aspires to become a great scientist like his father, but – also like his father – ends up accidentally shrinking his kids.
