Jason Bateman reveals why he is no longer directing the Ryan Reynolds-led Clue reboot

April 7, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Before James Bobin (Alice Through the Looking Glass) entered talks to helm the Clue reboot, Ozark star Jason Bateman was set to star and direct alongside Ryan Reynolds before departing the project.

In a recent interview with Collider, Bateman revealed he was forced to leave the reboot of Clue due to the size of the project and his scheduling commitments to shooting and directing Netflix’s Ozark.

“[Clue is] something that we were getting very close to starting, but as it turned out something of that size takes much, much longer to do than what the seasonal hiatus was able to accommodate. It would have pushed back the start of this season too far. So unfortunately I had to step off of that.”

Bateman continued to explain that once Ozark is wrapped up, he would be interested in returning to the project and is eager to tackle a big feature film like Clue.

“But if it’s still around when Ozark is all wrapped up, I’d love to do it. But who knows, they might put a different director on it before then. We’ll see. Unfortunately my ability to direct features really kind of—there’s a certain size of a film that I just can’t qualify for [right now] because of the amount of time that I’m able to give in prep, in shooting, and in post.”

While Ozark hasn’t been renewed for a fourth season as of yet, the show is one of Netflix’s most popular series so it’s expected to happen sooner rather than later.

The newly named 20th Century Studios are behind the comedic murder-mystery movie based on the iconic Hasbro board game, which was previously adapted in 1985 and directed by Johnathan Lynn, featuring a cast of Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, and Lesley Ann Warren as they attempt to discover who killed Mr. Boddy. However, the reboot is not connected to the original 1985 feature.

Zombieland and Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are writing the screenplay with Reynolds’s Maximum Effort set to produce the film alongside Hasbro Studios’ Allspark Pictures. No casting news has been revealed as of yet.
