Suicide Squad director David Ayer confirms Joker fan theory

May 6, 2020 by Samuel Brace

David Ayer, the director of Suicide Squad, has confirmed a fan theory about Jared Leto’s Joker.

The first attempt to bring Suicide Squad to the big screen certainly wasn’t a slam dunk, even if it did make some big bucks at the box office. One element fans didn’t respond too well to was Jared Leto’s unique take on the Joker.

His bizarre tattoos were singled out for criticism, including an often mocked one that says ‘damaged’ across his forehead. Well, a certain fan theory about this tattoo has now been confirmed by director David Ayer.

A fan posted on Twitter his theory which stated: “I think the damaged tattoo is actually pretty ingenious, but only for those who understand. Joker got the tattoo because batman damaged his smile in a failed attempt at revenge for killing Robin. All with the intent to antagonize and infuriate Batman simply by seeing his face.” This led Ayer to respond: “Exactly.”

Whether this explanation of the tattoo makes it any more palatable in fans’ eyes remains to be seen. As for Suicide Squad, James Gunn’s attempt to revive the brand with The Suicide Squad has a lot of positivity behind it already, despite being more than a year out from release.

The Suicide Squad sees James Gunn directing a cast that includes Suicide Squad returnees Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) as well as new DCEU additions Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, Alice Braga, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Jennifer Holland, David Dastmalchian, Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, John Cena, Pete Davidson, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Julio Ruiz, Steve Agee, Michael Rooker, and Sean Gunn.
