Suicide Squad director is heartbroken that most of Jared Leto’s Joker work won’t be seen

May 8, 2020 by Samuel Brace

David Ayer, the director of Suicide Squad, says that his “heart breaks” for Jared Leto as most of his “magnificent” work as the Joker won’t be seen.

It’s fair to say that Jared Leto’s performance as the Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad didn’t live up to most people’s expectations. It’s true though that the bar was set extraordinarily high but audiences just didn’t see to warm to his interpretation of the character.

Perhaps one issue is that Joker’s presence in the movie was very minimal, with a lot of Jared Leto’s work as the character not making it into the movie. Director David Ayer has shared his sadness about this as he believes Leto did an incredible job but people won’t be able to see it.

Responding to fan on Twitter, he said: “For sure character creation is a tightrope. I took inspiration from the current DC comics. I find it incredible it’s still such a topic 5 years later. My heart breaks for Jared – he did magnificent work. Most of it remains unseen.”

It must be extra tough for Leto having to then watch Joaquin Phoenix go and win an Oscar for his turn in Joker last year. It also seems that Leto won’t get the chance to reprise his role and change people’s opinion about his performance.
