Damon Lindelof wants “someone else to take their shot” at Watchmen

July 6, 2020 by Gary Collinson

While the news that HBO and Damon Lindelof were bringing Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen to the small screen was met with plenty of apprehension amongst fans, the resulting show exceeded any and all expectations and proved to be one of the highlights of last season’s TV calendar.

Acclaimed by fans and critics alike, there’s been plenty of demand for a second season; however, HBO said any decision on a second season lies solely with Lindelof, and he’s stated on numerous occasions that he put everything into the first season and has already told the story he set out to tell. That’s something Lindelof has now reiterated in a recent interview with Collider, stating that he feels he’s had his turn and “it’s someone else’s turn to dance.”

“The legacy of Watchmen is Alan [Moore] and Dave [Gibbons] created it and it sat for 30 years, obviously Zack Snyder made his movie which was a pretty canonical adaptation of the 12 issues, and then we made our season of television,” said Lindelof. “That was my turn. I got in the middle of the dance floor for a minute and got to do my move, but then you retreat to the edge of the circle and it’s someone else’s turn to dance.”

“Suffice it to say that I just feel like what’s best for Watchmen, this thing that I love, is for someone else to take their shot at it,” he continued. “I think that that’s just gonna be much more interesting than anything that I would do moving forwards… I issue this invitation to anyone out there: If you have an idea, figure out a way to pitch it. But probably not to me. Watchmen is not mine. It’s ours. And I want to see how someone else interprets this incredible story.”

It wouldn’t be hard to imagine a Fargo-style anthology approach to the series, with different creative talent coming in to explore various facets of the Watchmen universe; however, it seems that unless Lindelof has a change of heart, we may not get to see any continuation of the Angela Abar storyline (nor an answer to the big question surrounding the character coming out of the finale).

“Honestly, I feel like I think HBO would want it back in a heartbeat, but if [showrunner] Damon Lindelof doesn’t see an entry point for Season 2, I think that the possibilities are infinite,” said actress Regina King, who portrayed Angela/Sister Night. “But I feel that if Damon doesn’t see it, then it’s going to be a no for me.”
