HBO Max’s Gotham Central series will take place a year before The Batman, states Matt Reeves

August 28, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Back in July it was announced that The Batman director Matt Reeves is set to expand the world of his Dark Knight by teaming with HBO Max for a TV series taking place in the world of the upcoming movie reboot, focusing on the Gotham City Police Department and building “on the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City.”

Now, following his DC FanDome appearance and unveiling of the first trailer for The Batman, Reeves has confirmed that while the movie takes place in ‘Year Two’ of Bruce Wayne’s crimefighting career, the TV series will be set during ‘Year One’.

“You start to see the story from the point of view of these corrupt cops, one in particular,” said Reeves. “The Gotham PD series will go into the corruption of the Gotham Police Department…it goes back to Batman Year One…we’ll see these characters from a perspective we’ve never seen before.”

At this point, there’s no word as to whether the series will feature any characters from The Batman, although one would suspect that we may well get appearances from the likes of Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon and other members of the GCPD and D.A.’s office. Whether Robert Pattinson’s Batman pops up, we shall have to wait and see…

The Batman sees Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) donning the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Zoe Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora) as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Carmine Falcone, Alex Ferns (Chernobyl) as Commissioner Pete Savage, Con O’Neill (Ordinary Lies) as Chief Mackenzie Bock, Peter Sarsgaard (The Killing) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) as Officer Stanley Merkel and Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as Bella Real.
