Exclusive Interview – Vampiro and Michael Paszt on their documentary Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro

September 1, 2020 by EJ Moreno

EJ Moreno hops on a Zoom call with the man behind Vampiro, Ian Hodgkinson, and the director of his new documentary, Michael Paszt…

For over thirty years, Ian Hodgkinson has offered up more blood, sweat, and tears for pro-wrestling than most people combined. But he’s more than just his Vampiro persona; he’s also a caring father, talent manager, and lover of so all things strange. Filmmaker Michael Paszt captures all of that perfectly in this new documentary, Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro.

Hodgkinson and Paszt took the time to speak with me about this project and what it was like crafting such a personal look at one man’s life in wrestling. The things I learned in this interview you’ll see below are that Hodgkinson is a long-time horror fan, and you should never compare this to the other wrestling documentary from this year…

Semi-retired professional wrestler Ian Hodgkinson reveals the harsh realities behind the glamour of being in the world of wrestling as the infamous ‘Vampiro.’ A Lucha Libre legend, Hodgkinson tells the astonishing story about his meteoric rise to fame in the ’90s and how it almost killed him. Yet none of that was as back-breaking as his current life – working behind-the-scenes as the Director of Talent for Lucha Libre AAA in Mexico City and Lucha Underground in Los Angeles, while simultaneously raising his teenage daughter Dasha in remote Northern Canada as a single parent.

Nail in the Coffin: The Fall & Rise of Vampiro is set for release in theaters on September 4th, followed by a VOD/Digital release on September 8th.
