Comic Book Review – Origins #1

Calum Petrie reviews Origins #1…

Origins is a brand new series brought to us by the great team at BOOM! Studios. The comic appears to be set on… well, that’s where this gets unclear… Earth, possibly? The whole adventure in issue #1 is shrouded in so much mystery that I am a little unclear of the setting. Though with it being a new series I am willing to dive in and give this my attention and opinion.

The story appears to be set after some apocalyptic event, where the world has reverted back to nature and vegetation grows everywhere. The apparent extinction of humankind may or may not be on the cards. The one thing I know for absolute certainty is that this is one gorgeous comic.
It may not be telling a very happy tale – in fact it is a pretty depressing tale – but artwork is the vibrant and lively.

The first issue is not the longest, wrapping up after just 21 pages, and it does fall a little flat and feels somewhat deflating. The characters are not given much chance to make an impression; though the character design is very nice, the personalities to go with them is yet to be explored in any real detail.

I feel horrible talking about a new comic series like this, but I hope the rest of Origins picks up. This is not a great start and feels like they have tried to leave the story on a cliffhanger. Unfortunately, the issue ends before anything of real interest managed to get too much of my attention. I will follow this series as this is only the first chapter of six, and I feel with art this beautiful, Origins may still be one to watch out for.
