SPOILERS: The Mandalorian season 2 finale seemingly confirms new spinoff series

December 19, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

Spoilers for the season two finale of The Mandalorian follow; you have been warned…

Last month, reports began circulating suggesting that Lucasfilm was about to kick off production on a Boba Fett-headlined spinoff from The Mandalorian, and while the Disney Investor Day brought word of a host of new Star Wars TV series, the fan favourite bounty hunter was absent from the wealth of announced projects.

However, as those who stuck around through the end credits of The Mandalorian’s season two finale will be aware, Boba Fett is indeed set to return for ‘The Book of Boba Fett‘, which will air in December 2021.

The post-credits scene of the finale sees Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand blowing away a few Gammorean guards and other scum and villainy in Jabba’s palace before Boba enters, shooting Bib Fortuna (who somehow survived the sail barge explosion in Return of the Jedi) and taking his place on Jabba’s throne – presumably the new crime lord of Tatooine.

During the Disney Investor Day, it was announced that season three of The Mandalorian will premiere on Disney+ in December 2021, and while most reports are suggesting that The Book of Boba Fett will be its own standalone series, there is some speculation that it could actually be the subtitle for the third season of the show.

It would certainly seem an odd decision for Disney to debut two Star Wars series in the same month (both with very similar looking protagonists), but given the events of The Mandalorian’s finale, Din Djarin’s story looks far from over, despite the fact he has succeeded in reuniting Grogu with the Jedi. Hopefully we’ll get some clarification soon.
