Alpha phase for Elite Dangerous: Odyssey now underway

March 30, 2021 by Andrew Newton

Frontier Developments’ Elite Dangerous: Odyssey PC Alpha is now underway for players who own the Lifetime Expansion Pass and those who have pre-ordered the Odyssey Deluxe Alpha expansion pack.  This first phase of the highly anticipated expansion will see commanders set foot on alien worlds for the first time.

Over the next several weeks there will 4 phases that will gradually introduce new gameplay features and expand the amount of content that can be accessed by commanders.  These phases include:

Phase 1: First Steps. – This phase focuses on Odyssey’s core systems and network features and will see all Commanders grouped into a single star system to maximise player interaction. Players will be able to purchase the Remlock Maverick scavenger suit and the Takada and Kinematic weapon sets and take part in a selection of activities, such as salvage, collection and delivery. There will not be access to spaceships during this phase but in-system travel will still be possible thanks to the new Apex Interstellar feature.

Phase 2: Combat. – This will introduce Odyssey’s first person combat experience, giving Commanders access to the Manticore Dominator combat suit. Faction conflicts will be enabled, in time for the Frontline Solutions Mercenary Company to start operations in this phase. Players will also be able to travel up to 20 light years in their own spaceships and take part in an expanded variety of missions, including trading with settlements.

Phase 3: Exploration. – The playable bubble will be expanded to 50 light years and include unexplored planets and the coveted “First Footfall” experience. Commanders will be able to use the Supratech Artemis explorer suit and analyse alien organics with the Genetic Sampler tool.

Phase 4: Compatibility. In this final phase of the Alpha, players will have access to their own Commanders, and test the inclusion of existing features in the main game, such as Fleet Carriers, ship-launched Fighters and SRVs.

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey releases on PC in later this spring. PC Commanders can pre-order now and gain access to the Alpha via Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Frontier Store.
