Promising Young Woman’s Emerald Fennell to write Zatanna movie for DC Films

March 23, 2021 by EJ Moreno

From one promising young woman to another, Emerald Fennell has found her next major gig. Warner Bros and DC Films have tapped the award-winning writer/director of Oscar-contender Promising Young Woman to pen a script for their hero Zatanna.

Variety broke the story today that the upcoming movie from Warner Bros.’ DC Films will also see J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions producing. At the time of reporting, Fennell is only penning the script, and there’s no word on who will helm the project.

This project will mark Zatanna’s first time appearing in live-action on the big screen. As a long-running member of the Justice League and Justice League Dark in the comics, many fans feel this film is long overdue. Zatanna did appear in later seasons of the superhero series Smallville, where Serinda Swan played the magical role.

In the comics and other mediums, Zatanna is a magician and considered by many in the DC universe asd one of the most powerful sorcerers. Her powers are genetic, coming from her alchemist father, Zatara, and she has also been romantically linked to John Constantine. Could this solo movie be the first step towards a Justice League Dark film in the DCEU?
