The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director on Zemo’s return to the MCU

March 5, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

After driving Earth’s Mightiest Heroes apart in Captain America: Civil War, Helmut Zemo is set to make his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe this month – complete with comic book accurate mask and colour scheme – as Daniel Bruhl reprises his role for the upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Speaking to D23 Magazine, director Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Punisher) has revealed how excited she was to get the opportunity to further explore Zemo’s story in the six-part series.

“He’s very exciting to bring back because we’ve left him in a very dark place,” said Skogland. “What was fun about working with Daniel and all three of them is that we go on a very unexpected ride, and we discover things about Baron Zemo we didn’t anticipate. As a result, we feel satisfied that the character is much more complex than we originally knew.”

As we learned from his dialogue in the Super Bowl trailer, Zemo is still hell bent on ridding the world of superheroes in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, although several shots appeared to show him alongside – and potentially working with – Sam and Bucky, and so it will certainly be interesting to see where this “unexpected ride” takes us.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier features a cast that includes MCU veterans Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Daniel Bruhl (Zemo) and Georges St-Pierre (Batroc) alongside new additions Wyatt Russell (Overlord), Carl Lumbly (Doctor Sleep), Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Adepero Oduye (The Big Short), Desmond Chiam (Now Apocalypse), Miki Ishikawa (The Terror: Infamy) and Noah Mills (The Brave).
