Cannes Film Festival to open with Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard musical Annette

April 19, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Nine years after Holy Motors bowed and wowed at the Cannes Film Festival, Leo Carax’s new film has been confirmed as the opening night pick for the 74th edition of the world renowned film festival. Annette, a musical starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard will receive its world premiere In Competetion when the delayed event gets underway on July 6th, and you can watch the first trailer below.

Annette, which has an original soundtrack composed by Sparks is set in contemporary Los Angeles, and tells the story of Henry (Adam Driver), a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor and Ann (Marion Cotillard), a singer of international renown. In the spotlight, they are the perfect couple, healthy, happy, and glamourous. The birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious girl with an exceptional destiny, will change their lives.

Speaking about Annette‘s selection as the opening night film, festival president Pierre Lescure said “Every Leos Carax film is an event. And this one delivers on its promises. Annette is the gift that lovers of cinema, music and culture were hoping for, one that we have been yearning for during the past year”.

Both Driver and Cotillard have musical history on film, with the former delivering an emotional wallop with that Sondheim solo at the end of Marriage Story, while Cotillard won an Academy Award for her depiction of Édith Piaf in La Vie en Rose.
