Rian Johnson has spoken to Dave Filoni about directing an episode of The Mandalorian

April 19, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

Here’s a piece of news that is likely to stir very different reactions depending on which side of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi fence you sit, but according to a report from USA Today’s Sariah Wilson, director Rian Johnson is “dying” to helm an episode of The Mandalorian and has even chatted with producer Dave Filoni about doing so.

“I asked Rian if he’d ever consider doing an episode of The Mandalorian,” wrote Wilson on Twitter. “He said he was dying to, but that for him it’s all about scheduling. He’s been writing [Knives Out 2] and now he’s going to go directly into filming it. So it would be a matter of finding time to break away and do it. He said he has spoken to Dave Filoni about it. He had gone and visited the set during Season 1. He said it was so cool and I told him I was very jealous. He had seen Baby Yoda months before the reveal.”

As Wilson notes, Johnson is currently a little preoccupied with the Knives Out franchise, having recently signed a huge $400+ million deal to produce two sequels to the acclaimed mystery film for Netflix. He’s also still attached to his planned Star Wars trilogy, although it remains to be seen if that will ever come to fruition. However, with so many Star Wars shows on the horizon, and Johnson having past TV experience with Breaking Bad, perhaps he’ll manage to squeeze in another trip to the galaxy far, far away as part of Lucasfilm’s Disney+ slate? Is that something you’d like to see? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

The Mandalorian season two sees the returning Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin), Gina Carano (Cara Dune), Carl Weathers (Greef Karga), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon), Bill Burr (Mayfield), and Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand) joined by the likes of Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), Katee Sackhoff (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Michael Biehn (The Terminator), Rosario Dawson (Daredevil), and WWE Superstar Sasha Banks.
