Sony moves up release date for Escape Room 2 to July

April 27, 2021 by EJ Moreno

For months, we’ve heard about films seeing delays. The global health crisis has shaken the industry, but a shift to something better could be on the horizon is Sony is adding to a small list of films which are being moved up from 2022 to a 2021 release.

Escape Room 2 is coming out on July 16th of this year after being taken off the release calendar. The pandemic hit this film hard as it shifted dates multiple times; first, Sony had the movie set to open on April 17th, 2020, moving it to August 14th and then December 30th 2020 before shelving release plans until 2022.

July 16th is quite the busy release date, with Sony already having Kay Cannon’s Camila Cabello-starring musical Cinderella set for release on that date (at the time of writing, both movies are still slated for the date), while Warner Bros will also release Space Jam 2, as will Searchlight with Sundance horror film Night House.

The first Escape Room followed six strangers who participate in an escape room game that turns to be a fairly deadlier time. It was a box office success earning $155 million on a $9 million budget.

2019’s Escape Room director Adam Robitel returns to helm the sequel from a screenplay by Will Honley and Maria Melnik & Daniel Tuch; Melnik penned the first film.
