Horror comedy – it’s literally an oxymoron. How can any piece of storytelling make sense if it’s trying to both scare someone and make them laugh their head off? Genre mixers have existed for a while now, but those combinations have at least made sense: action and fantasy, science fiction and noir, tragedy and thriller. These are legitimate.
And yet, a horror comedy is just as legitimate. Sure, you might be terrified one scene, but the endgoal is to keep you morbidly happy. Humans have an inherent need to feel less-anxious about the world. There are times in our lives when we get the jeepers scared out of us, only for us to supplement that fear with hearty laughter.
