Zack Snyder says a director’s cut of Sucker Punch exists

May 23, 2021 by Gary Collinson

As we’ve seen with the likes of Watchmen, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and most recently Justice League, Zack Snyder is a filmmaker who’s very fond of the extended director’s cut.

And, speaking to Vanity Fair to promote his latest movie Army of the Dead, Snyder has revealed the existence of another radically-different director’s cut of one of his past projects: the critically-lambasted 2011 action fantasy Sucker Punch.

“[Sucker Punch] was the first time where I really faced, like, a true radical restructuring of the film for it to be more commercial,” said Snyder. “And there is a director’s cut of that movie that has yet to be released. I’ll say that out loud.”

Sucker Punch – which starred Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carlo Gugino and Oscar Isaac – has already been released in an extended edition, with the home-video release adding 18 minutes of extra material which pushed the MPAA rating up from a PG-13 to an R.

Whether there’s much call for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch outside of the filmmaker’s hardcore fanbase remains to be seen, and we can’t imagine that #RestoreTheSuckerVerse is going to pick up as much traction as #ReleaseTheSnyderCut managed. Still, only time will tell…
