Jupiter’s Legacy effectively cancelled as Netflix moves onto other Millarworld properties starting with Supercrooks

June 3, 2021 by Ricky Church

While the word ‘cancelled’ was not used, Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy effectively is as Deadline and Jupiter’s Legacy creator Mark Millar announced the cast was being released from their contracts as Netflix is shifting its focus onto Supercrooks, another Millerworld property.

Jupiter’s Legacy is based off the comic series by Millar and artist Frank Quietly. It starred Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, Ben Daniels and others as a family of superheroes and the legacy they have to uphold as the parent’s old-fashioned values and codes are at odds with both the heroes and villains of the modern world.

Netflix first acquired Millarworld in 2017 and had planned for Jupiter’s Legacy to be one of the streamer’s leading franchises with a budget of over $200 million. Now, however, the series will instead become something of an anthology as Netflix and Millar had “a different creative direction with the IP” and decided to develop Supercrooks, Millar’s next comic series set in his Millarworld from him and artist Leinil Francis Yu which will begin later this year.

Supercrooks is described as “a return to the world of Jupiter’s Legacy with a ragtag gang of supervillains, con artists, petty thieves and leg-breakers who band together for the heist of the century and the most outrageous crime story you’ve ever seen in your life. Crime pays, and they’re going to prove it. Some people just want to have the time of their lives and make a little dirty money while they’re doing it. If the superheroes get in the way, they’re going to be spitting teeth.” Supercrooks will premiere later this year on Netflix as a short anime series before a live-action series begins development.

In a statement released on Twitter, Millar spoke of the decision to let the Jupiter’s Legacy cast go from their contracts and of creating the Supercrooks show, those he did hint they may return to the Jupiter’s Legacy story in the future:

After nearly a century of keeping mankind safe, the world’s first generation of superheroes must look to their children to continue the legacy. But tensions rise as the young superheroes, hungry to prove their worth, struggle to live up to their parents’ legendary public reputations — and exacting personal standards. Based on the graphic novels by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, Jupiter’s Legacy is an epic superhero drama that spans decades and navigates the complex dynamics of family, power, and loyalty.

Jupiter’s Legacy stars Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, Ben Daniels, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade, Matt Lanter, Tenika Davis, Anna Akana, Tyler Mane and Chase Tang.
