Spiral’s Darren Lynn Bousman to direct The LaLaurie Mansion for The Conjuring creators

June 11, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

A new horror franchise is being born from the minds of the creators of The Conjuring, Chad and Corey Hayes, who along with producers Faster Horse Pictures have tasked Spiral director Darren Lynn Bousman with bringing The LaLaurie Mansion to life.

Deadline report that Bousman, who directed four of the Saw movies, including this year’s Spiral, will helm the first in a proposed series of films focusing on the infamous New Orleans house, which featured prominently in American Horror Story: Coven, and has been closed off to the public since 1932. It is the location where socialite Delphine LaLaurie tortured and murdered numerous slaves in early 1800s, and is supposedly where the Hayes brothers wrote a portion of the films script.

It is intended that the The LaLaurie Mansion franchise will unfold in multiple installments, each covering a different period of time, with Bousman’s opener set in the present day. The director, who has also spent some time in the mansion said “Joining this project is a dream come true for me. For as long as I can remember I have been obsessed with the paranormal. Anyone who studies the supernatural knows the legends and lore of the LaLaurie Mansion. It’s the holy grail of these types of environments. Recently I was allowed access to the house, and was able to stay there with the Hayes brothers. There is no way to articulate my 72 hours inside those walls. The house consumes you. Its history cripples you. The Hayes Brothers have crafted such an emotional, suspenseful, and scary narrative that I cannot wait to introduce the world to this unbelievable location.”

One of  the great strengths of The Conjuring franchise is how it is rooted in history and supposed true events, so if this can be the foundation of a new set of films then there’s also no reason this can’t spin off into a $2 billion dollar series.
