Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor returns in Doctor Who: The God of Phantoms

August 19, 2021 by Andrew Newton

The gothic era of the 1970s is brought to life in the latest audio adventure for the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who: Philip Hinchcliffe Presents – The God of Phantoms from Big Finish.  Doctor Who: The God of Phantoms is based on a story by Philip Hinchcliffe, acclaimed producer of Doctor Who between 1975-77, and features Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor and Louise Jameson as Leela in an exciting adventure of secrets and deceit.

In The God of Phantoms the TARDIS arrives on a colony world in the distant future where the inhabitants are seeing the ghosts of loved ones, only these ghosts are mysteriously whisking these people away.  It’s up to the Doctor and Leela to investigate where these spirits are coming from and where they are taking the people too, in the process discovering a terrible secret.

The God of Phantoms cast is completed by Tim Faulkner (The End of the Beginning), Bryan Dick (Eric and Ernie, Gallifrey: Time War), Lynsey Murrell (The Blazing Hour), Aurora Burghart (Stranded 1, Masterful), Nigel Fairs (Bernice Summerfield, Gallifrey), Mandi Symonds (The Legacy of Time, The Diary of River Song), Glen McCready (The Robots, The Paternoster Gang) and Big Finish newcomer Sam Stafford.

Philip Hinchcliffe said: “With these stories, I always try to hit the spot on the kind of things that we did on television – some are sci-fi, some have a historical setting, with this particular one set in the future. And I’m often attracted to the ideas of the Doctor’s earlier life, and that’s what underpins this story.”

Tom Baker said: “When I fell into Doctor Who in the 70s, and realised that Philip liked what I was doing, I kept on with it! It’s a wonderful, wonderful part and there’s nothing like it – I’m really at home doing this.”

Doctor Who: Philip Hinchcliffe Presents – The God of Phantoms is available as a digital download for £16.99 or as a collector’s edition 3-CD box set at £19.99.  Visit the Big Finish website for more details.
