Mary Elizabeth Winstead says a Huntress return “would be so much fun”

September 17, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

Following the news that Jurnee Smollett is set to reprise the role of Black Canary for an HBO Max Original movie, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead has revealed that she’d also be open to a DCEU return as The Huntress if the opportunity should arise.

“If it came together in the right way, it would be so much fun,” said Winstead when asked by The Hollywood Reporter about the prospect of her suiting up for a second time. “I know that Jurnee [Smollett] is doing a Black Canary movie, which I’m so excited for. She’s amazing and she’s going to kill that, so I can’t wait to see where that goes. I don’t know if that’s going to involve Huntress or not, but I love that character and I love the version that we were able to create in Birds of Prey. But I also know there are lots of different versions and iterations of Huntress that have been out there before, whether it be in TV or comic books. So there’s lots of different places she could be taken. If that’s with me, that would be really cool, and I’d love to see where that goes. But I’m also happy to watch whatever direction it goes in.”

Given where things left off in Birds of Prey, an appearance in the Black Canary movie certainly seems like the logical place to see the Huntress, although there are other possibilities such as the Batgirl film, which has recently cast In the Heights actress Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, or perhaps even her own solo feature. What are your thoughts? Would you like to see more of Huntress? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) and sees Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smollett (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask, Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz, Ali Wong (Black Box), Robert Catrini (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), Steven Williams (The Chi), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse) and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs).
