The Matrix Resurrections synopsis ignores the sequels as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II confirms Morpheus role

September 12, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

Warner Bros. invited fans back into The Matrix this week with the release of the first trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, the fourth instalment in the iconic sci-fi action series. And, while the trailer certainly posed plenty of questions, do too does the new official synopsis – most interestingly, the lack of any mention of The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and the specific mention of continuing the original movie. See for yourself here…

“The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first MATRIX film. It reunites Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as cinematic icons Neo & Trinity in an expansion of their story that ventures back into the Matrix and even deeper down the rabbit hole.

A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it’s set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that’s required to see the truth is to free your mind.

Twenty years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. The Matrix remains in the zeitgeist as a film that has changed the way we look at cinema and reality itself. With its game-changing action and visual effects, The Matrix helped pave the way for films to follow.”

So, might we be getting some kind of Halloween-style direct sequel to the first movie? Some major retconning? Or is this just Warner Bros. not wanting to remind people that Reloaded and Revolutions actually exist?

We’ll likely have to wait until December to know for sure, but one question we do have an answer for is the identity of Watchmen and Candyman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character, with the actor confirming via Instagram that – as long rumoured – he is indeed portraying Morpheus, played of course by Laurence Fishburne in the original trilogy…
