Kathleen Kennedy recalls “emotional” reunion between Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen on Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi set

November 23, 2021 by Liam Waddington

One of the most anticipated projects in the Star Wars universe is the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series which will see the reunion of Ewan McGregor’s Kenobi and Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader.

Now, in an interview with Empire, Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, has recalled the on-set reunion between the two actors after not appearing together for over 15 years.

“The thing that was most exciting was being on the set and watching the two of them get excited,” said Kennedy. “They hadn’t seen one another in a long time. I was surprised at just how incredibly emotional it was for each of them to find themselves back in these roles, and just realizing how important Star Wars was to each of them. It was the beginning of their careers.”

McGregor and Christensen last appeared as their respective characters onscreen together in 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Earlier this month, Lucasfilm released a behind-the-scenes video featuring concept art for the upcoming series which teased a rematch between Kenobi and Vader. In addition to appearing in the Kenobi series, Christensen is also set to appear in the upcoming Ahsoka series alongside Rosario Dawson.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi begins ten years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, where Kenobi faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) and stars McGregor (Ben Kenobi), Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader), Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars) and Bonnie Piesse (Beru Lars), as well as Star Wars newcomers Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Maya Erskine and Benny Safdie.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is coming to Disney+ in 2022.
