Sofia Boutella joins Zack Snyder’s Netflix sci-fi film Rebel Moon

November 2, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Zack Snyder is known for casting stunning beauties and placing them in kick-ass roles, and now the filmmaker has another to add to his arsenal. Deadline reports that Sofia Boutella will lead Rebel Moon, an upcoming Netflix film from Snyder.

Deadline notes that Zack Snyder met with “talent for months for the lead role” before narrowing it down to a small group. Boutella reportedly wowed the filmmaker within that group and locked in a leading role for this sci-fi action movie.

Boutella is no stranger to action films, having a breakout role in Kingsman: The Secret Service before joining The Mummy and Atomic Blonde. Recently, the actress moved to a more arthouse approach by appearing in A24’s Climax from Gaspar Noé. Rebel Moon will mark one of her most high-profile starring roles as Netflix has big plans for the film following Army of the Dead’s success.

The launch of Snyder’s zombie movie in 2021 saw Zack and Deborah Snyder’s The Stone Quarry sign a first-look deal with the studio. Since signing, Snyder has teased plenty of projects while confirming the Star Wars-inspired Rebel Moon would be next up.

As per Deadline, Rebel Moon is “set in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand the Tyrant.”
