Star Trek: Prodigy renewed for second season, may spawn theatrical movies

November 13, 2021 by Gary Collinson

A few weeks on from its premiere, Paramount+ has handed out a season two renewal to Star Trek: Prodigy, the first animated entry in the long-running sci-fi franchise to be aimed specifically at children.

Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman (Hotel Transylvania,The Lego Movie) and featuring the return of Star Trek: Voyager’s Kate Mulgrew as Kathryn Janeway, the show follows a group of young aliens who commandeer a Federation starship, with Janeway appearing as the ship’s Emergency Training Holographic Advisor.

As revealed by THR, Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins is also working with Star Trek TV supremo Alex Kurtzman to further develop the world of Prodigy, with plans for a theatrical feature film and potential live-action movies that would live alongside the J.J. Abrams-produced film series.

Star Trek: Prodigy follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

The first season of Star Trek: Prodigy is currently releasing on Paramount_.
